Weight Loss, Alcohol And Mens Health

You may not have noticed but men and women are actually quite different.

Apart from the obvious men have some specific barriers when it comes to losing weight that women don’t. As a result they often don’t get focused on because typically weight loss programs are developed for women.

For men, lack of knowledge regarding weight loss is generally the major stumbling block. Additionally, many men aren’t prepared to admit that weight loss is a problem. This can be due to men being less restricted by their body image than women. Some men can even think that a bit of extra weight hanging over the belt can be a sign of good health. We now know that the opposite is true – excess energy (fat) around the abdomen for men is much more dangerous than the energy stored around the hips, butts and thighs for women.

Alcohol can also be an issue for many men and many don’t want to give it up completely. The good news is that they don’t have to. Alcohol is a tricky thing but essentially the body doesn’t store alcohol because it’s a toxin. Therefore any energy from the alcohol the body may get is burned up. The problem arises when energy intake is high along with alcohol consumption. If the body is busy burning the alcohol it won’t worry about the energy from the chips and nuts – therefore the energy is excess and is stored. Therefore the beer gut isn’t really a beer gut, it’s a chip and nut gut. In other words get rid of the chips and nuts and you get rid of the gut.

Just to be sure though it’s recommended that men drink within safe levels. The recommendation is for men to trade off one kilometre of walking for one standard drink per day. (That doesn’t mean if men walk 20 k’s a week they can have 20 beers on a Friday night though.
