Lifestyle ProgramsA stroke occurs when an artery supplying blood to part of the brain becomes blocked or bursts. This in turn deprives that part of the brain of oxygen, leading to damage to the resulting brain tissue. There are two types of strokes – haemorrhagic and ischemic.
The following list is a reminder of the simple rules a person can follow to reduce their risk of stroke:
- Monitor and control blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels
- Be a non-smoker; eat a healthy diet low in saturated fats and salt
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Drink alcohol in moderation
- Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes most days of the week
- Manage your stress
- Get a good nights sleep
Following a few simple rules will help to reduce the likelihood of an event and thus reduce the prevalence of strokes in our aging community.
