So to help us all to enjoy the festivities, and the morning after here are some simple tips we can follow

Before you go out:
  • Have something to eat

  • Leave the car behind or nominate a non-drinker to drive

  • Have enough money for a cab fare home in case you're left stranded

  • Set a limit on how many drinks you'll have.

During the night:
  • Drink water or soft drinks between alcoholic drinks

  • Avoid shots of spirits and cocktails

  • Avoid rounds and shouts

  • Avoid mixing drinks

  • Eat something (avoid salty snacks)

  • Watch for drink spiking

  • Watch out for your mates and always tell someone where you're going.

After the night:
  • Never drive if you've been drinking

  • Don't try to sober up a drunk person with food

  • Don't accept a ride from a drinker

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Hang out with friends who will look after you if you get into trouble.

Remember, alcohol can be beneficial. It can reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, gall stones etc but only when consumed in moderation. Also, even though alcohol doesn't directly contribute to your stored energy (e.g. body fat) it can indirectly by adding to your overall daily energy intake (i.e. other foods are stored instead).
